How do you move your hips in a salsa dance?

29th September 2009

Hey i really need help on how to dance. I am in a quince court and i have no idea how to dance like salsa and merengue. especially the basic move where you move your hips. How do you do that. btw my practice is tomorrow and i don’t want to embarass myself. please help me :)

Its all about weight distribution initially, then comes the styling part.

Visit www.detroitsalsadance.com in article section there are some interesting tips.

For now, Here is how I would start

Stand with feet together side by side
– Note weight should be more or less equally distributed between legs

Now shift all your weight to left leg:
- feels like locking up your left leg
- now your right leg is bent forward

Repeat the same but switch legs – meaning shift all your weight to the right leg and bend your left leg forward

That’s how you dance meringue. Notice when you shift weight the hip moves as well. Salsa is very similar except that the beats are different. After this you can build thing more with styling

    LOL
Sway your hips left and right
    Feel the rhythm!

I agree with the first noter. It is in a side to side swaying motion. If you want to think of it another way, the main movement is in your lower body. If your shoulders tend to sway with the rhythm of the music as well, more power to you. It, as you probably know, is a more fluid type of dancing. Just have fun and use your hips…that is my advice to you. :) Good luck. I hope this helps you any. :)
