¿ Do you know how to dance salsa ?

2nd June

how did you learn ?

Yes, I do. It was pretty easy to pick up by just watching. But maybe that is because I was already a trained dancer.

Can I dance salsa in flat shoes?

21st May

I want to learn salsa and other similar dances, but I don’t know how to walk in heels, so I doubt I can even dance in them.

Do they allow flat shoes, or at least 1-inch shoes?

Well as a guy who dances salsa, my feet hurt when I wear my dress shoes which aren’t flat. My dance partners have often danced with some formal looking flats, though the norm is heels. Through practice my partners have often been barefoot. I think that u should learn comfortably, and if u have to perform in front of a crowd opt for heels for appearances. From experience I think that you will learn best in the dancers socks or barefoot, most instructors are very understanding so learning comfortably will most likely not be a problem.

hope I have been of some help

How to Overcome the Post Christmas Blues

9th May

Christmas is over. For most of us that means a nice rest after all the dreaded preparation goes into Yuletide. But January is a partically cruel month. Terrible weather plagues us, all our money has dissolved from our pockets and the next bank holiday is oh so far away. What could possibly lift our spirits now that we’ve peeled ourselves off our sofas and back to the workplace? I have a few tips on how to keep upbeat through the greyest time of the year.

Firstly, I would suggest to anyone who wants a happy new year not to make any drastic resolutions. Giving up smoking would be a positive action, but doing it cold turkey (no pun intended) after Christmas leaves with no incentive to resist temptation. Also keep your resolutions quiet so no one has to know if you fail!                                                                                                                                                    So like everyone else you’ve overdone it with the eating and drinking, and now all you see is diet and fitness ads on TV. How depressing. Why don’t you try an unusual exercise plan? Pole fitness, Salsa dance lessons and abseiling are increasingly popular activities which can keep you lean without the boredom of using an exercise bike at the gym.                                                                                 Change your look! If you’re a guy then you could use a new hair styling product or buy a shirt for work would you wouldn’t usually wear. Have fun and experiment. If you’re a girl then why not treat yourself to a haircut or even dye your hair a different colour? Call me superficial but I always find this is a good pick me up!                                                                                                                                                     If you suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) then January can be an incredibly difficult time. The long nights can make anyone feel lethargic. Try to keep your home well lit during the winter with clear coloured bulbs. If you are concerned about electricity, using tea lights in white vases can be just as soothing.                                                                                                                                                                     Still feeling low? splash some colour into your life. Colour has a strong psycological effect on the human brain and can determine how happy we feel. In the winter avoid wearing the colour blue as this can make you feel cold and subdued. If you about to decorate your home, consider using warm shades such as burgandy, terracotta brown or pale gold yellow in the kitchen and living room to encourage socialness and vivacity!                                                                                                                             Just because you are on a tight budget this month doesn’t mean you have to be antisocial. Instead of going out, invite friends over for drinks. Prepare a day once a week when you do something fun with friends or a partner. Making a roast dinner every Sunday with your mates, or make Tuesdays ‘romantic movie night’ with your partner.

So forget the dreary weather and keep yourself open to all possibilities in the next few months. Happy New Year!

Top Ten Things to Do in Calgary this Winter

4th May

When winter’s winds blow it isn’t all that tempting to go out and explore a city, but in Calgary there is so much to do that it becomes difficult to stay indoors!

Of course not all of the city’s top ten activities take place in the great and snowy outdoors, but they are all the more enjoyable because of the seasonal conditions. From January through March all of Calgary is bursting at the seams with great activities, and among the most preferred are:

1. Fireside dining – you don’t have to stay at home to enjoy a cozy meal beside the fire. There are many restaurants in Calgary that serve hearty fare in spaces gently lit and warmed by large fireplaces. Some have scenic views and park settings, while others are set on the areas lakes or rivers. Try such restaurants as the Q Haute, The Ranche, Newport Grill and River Café.

2. Salsa Dancing – there are literally dozens of dancing classes and schools in the city focusing on the highly active ballroom dance style known as salsa. It is a great way to really stay fit during the long winter months.

3. Get out on the ice – Calgary has some great skating rinks, including the Olympic Plaza and Westside Recreation Center, as well as several others. A few, such as the Westside, are indoors and also offer full fitness facilities including a track and aquatic center.

4. Museum, museums, museums! – feel like taking in a museum? Calgary has galleries and museums galore as well as the fantastic Glenbow Museum and the ever popular Telus World of Science where visitors can become human “batteries”.

5. Slip sliding away – what is winter without the thrill of sledding? Calgary has dozens of great sliding and tobogganing hills, and most offer good parking and free runs. Check out Edworthy Park, Confederation Park, Deerfoot Athletic Park, Rundle Dry Pond, Canyon Meadows, Stanley Park, Elliston Park and the Fish Creek Escarpment.

6. The National Pastime – hockey is definitely one of Canada’s dominant sports and the Pengrowth Saddledome is the official home of the Calgary Flames Hockey Club. The award winning team has an enormous fan following, but tickets can usually be found for upcoming games.

7. Skiing – Alberta is chock full of world class skiing, with some less than three hours from Calgary. There is also the Canada Olympic Park for skiing and snowboarding as well.

8. Festivals – the winter months are not shy on festivals, and some of the city’s favorite events take place between January and March. There is the Calgary Fringe Festival, the $100 Film Festival, the Calgary Winter Festival and Zoolights among many others.

9. Cocoon – why not take in an on demand video or hop out for a quick video rental, order up some take-away food and nestle down in the warmth and coziness of the sofa or, even better, the bed.
10. Pretend that winter is gone – Calgary has two large greenhouses that make it easy to forget that winter is even occurring. The Calgary Zoo Botanical Garden and the Devonian Gardens are excellent cold weather escapes!

Review Of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance”

2nd May

We’re getting near the very end of the second season of Fox’ smash hit reality competition So You Think You Can Dance. So You Think You Can Dance has proved to be a grueling 12-week competition for the dancers. The show is produced by 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions, and was created by Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, who also serves as a judge the show. The final four who are dancing into the finals to become America’s number one dancer are: Benji Schimmer, Donyelle Jones, Travis Wall and Heidi Groskreutz. The August 8th, 2006 show brought us the final competitive performances from all four, both as solo artists and in pairs.

Heidi and Travis started off the finals with a pair’s disco performance. They danced to the disco theme song “Shake Your Groove Thing” by Peaches and Herb. Travis wore a John Travolta-esque white suit, and they did a full-on version of the 70′s Hustle. There were lots of lifts in the program that were executed with ease. The judges didn’t exactly find it memorable, but were mostly pleased by it. Nigel said that Heidi is the best girl partner in the entire competition. Judge Mary loved the dance. Brian and Nigel brought up Heidi’s facial expressions, saying that they worked for this dance in particular. Her unusual and mostly jarring facial expressions have been noticed by many throughout the season.

Benji and Donyelle’s turn found them attempting to execute the very difficult Viennese Waltz. Donyelle was wearing something that looked like a JC Penney prom dress. As a true Viennese Waltz, it missed the mark; Nigel Lythgoe summed the dance up in one word: hideous.

In an interesting turn of events, Travis and Benji danced together under then name of TRANJI in a program choreographed by Shane Sparks. The judges were very pleased by the routine, which featured both Travis and Benji dressed as 50′s New York newsboys.

The rest of the solos were not memorable at all, evidenced by the fact that I have no memory of them. The girls did a pairs number from the Broadway musical Sweet Charity.

Travis and Donyelle did a bluesy routine, dancing to “Georgia on My Mind” by Ray Charles. The judges said it was “beautiful and captivating” and Mary said the routine made her feel like “having a mint julep and a Georgia peach.” Brian said that it was pure art, and thanked Mia, who was the choreographer. Heidi and Benji came next with a aggressive and spirited Salsa, and Nigel said that Benji is the best male partner on the show who excels in executing lifts. Mary and Brian were equally as thrilled with the footwork and lifts. Together, Heidi and Benji were sensational.

The final performance of the night was a group performance choreographed by the famous Wade Robeson. The dancers were supposed to be famous couture models and posed and danced to Justin Timberlake’s new single “Sexy Back”.
