Salsa dance lessons (introductory/basic).?

20th March

There will be a 2-day (eight hours) salsa class at my gym soon.I am thinking of giving it a try.

What shoes should I be wearing? I don’t want to buy any special shoes yet as I might not be interested to continue with the lesson proper.

Can I wear my sports shoes? I really do not have any suitable shoes besides slip-ons and sandals.

And what should I be wearing? Would t-shirt and jeans be okay?

Should I decide to continue after this intro to salsa dance, then I would not mind purchasing proper shoes and attire.

BTW, I heard you really must have the rhythm to dance salsa.Any inputs as to what to expect and how can I get myself ready. I am willing to just let go and enjoy the music and movements. Is this enough?

Jeans will not be a good choice. Too restrictive. T shirt is OK, but pants should be fairly loose. You’ll be moving a lot. You wouldn’t want to go jogging in jeans, either, would you?
Shoes need at least a slingback, or you’ll be coming out of them all day (or curling your toes to keep them on, which is even worse). If you have shoes with some kind of a back and leather soles rather than rubber, they’ll do. Rubber soles risk injury; they’re too "sticky" on the floor when you’re turning. With those restrictions, some sandals are OK.
Rhythm isn’t a problem. The basic steps are quite simple, and the music has a definite beat, so you should anticipate no problems there. For beginner lessons, just letting go will work. Later you’ll want to work on isolations and restrictions, along with other technical matters.

What can I do to convince my bf to take me Salsa dancing?

20th March

I just started Salsa and I have been seeing this great guy, only he doesn’t dance. I think he’s a little intimidated b/c I have been dancing a long time (except not in Salsa and Latin) and also bc my teacher is really hot (and also gay and in a happy relationship). How can I help my bf become less self-conscious and release that sexy Latin guy inside him?
About my gay teacher–I’m not worried about him, it’s just that I think my bf is intimidated and I wanted everyone to know that I don’t have a crush on my teacher. Or well, maybe just a little one.

Where can I find a good class for salsa lessons in LA? Particularly the South Bay area?

18th March

I am Colombian and while I know how to dance salsa (or so I think LOL!) I’m looking for a class where I can learn more of the skilled dancing. I’m especially interested in learning Colombian style dancing because I love their style, it’s different from the way any other country dances salsa, hard to explain, you just have to see it for yourself. But if I can find a course with a Colombian instructor that would be great!!! : ) Any ideas?

Learn how to Salsa dance in Austin Texas!?

18th March

Hey guys, this is mainly for the people who live in Austin TX… of course if you know, please answer!
I want to learn how to salsa dance really bad… I believe it’s salsa dancing… The real sexy, fairly quick paced dance with a partner… If it’s not salsa tell me, but where in Austin can I go to learn that? I’ve got no dance experience, I’d just like to learn… Always have wanted to! If anyone can help I’d appreciate that.

I have a friend that started taking social dance classes and loves them! She’s gotten quite good. I believe that they probably teach Salsa. I think she goes to a place called "Go Dance." There are probably other studios. Look in the Yellow Pages or do a search on "social dancing."

Good luck!

Learn Spanish in Latin America – Much More Than Learning a Language

17th March

Many people choose to learn Spanish in Latin America because of the wide range of incredible locations in which to learn the language. Students can choose a beach location like Montanita in Ecuador, or a very historic town like Cusco, high up in the Andean Mountains of Peru. Whether you want to explore archaeological sites, experience indigenous culture, observe wildlife, or simply laze on unspoilt beaches, Latin America provides all the ingredients for the perfect learning experience.

If you want to see the jungle or have always wanted to go to Machu Picchu, then take a Spanish course that facilitates these aspirations. For example, El Paraiso Spanish Language School (Costa Rica) enables students to stay in Manuel Antonio National Park, with its beautiful beaches and extraordinary biodiversity. ACUPARI Language School (Peru) is based in Cusco, the amazing capital of the ancient Inca Empire. Some students divide their time between two locations so they can explore the natural and cultural diversity of Latin America.

Another reason people choose to learn Spanish in Latin America is the immense choice of courses available. They range from private one-to-one tuition to a myriad of specialized programmes. For example, Interhispanica (Argentina) offer Spanish and Latin American economy classes. OL?(Mexico) offer specially designed programmes for children, teenagers and seniors. Educacion Para Todos (Guatemala) offer customised programmes for social science and medical professionals. Most language schools offer special modules to meet the needs and personal interests of students.

A popular option is to combine a Spanish course with some volunteer work, either once you have finished your language course or during the time when you are not attending lessons. Typical areas of work include helping out in orphanages or nursery schools, working in local community projects, assisting with wildlife or conservation projects. Volunteer Latin America provides information on over one hundred Spanish language schools that offer volunteer work and internships. One such school is Tandem Santiago – Escuela de Idiomas Violeta Parra (Chile), which arranges internships for high school graduates and college students throughout Chile.

Many language schools enable students to combine a Spanish course with adventure and sporting activities. For example, Andean Global Studies (Ecuador) offer Spanish classes combined with diving, surfing or kiteboarding. The Mariposa Spanish School and Eco Hotel (Nicaragua) organizes horse riding trips to the Masaya Volcano. A wide range of outdoor pursuits and activities are offered at other language schools including trekking, paragliding, rock climbing, river rafting, skiing and snowboarding.

In addition to the Spanish courses, most language schools offer extra-curricular activities to suit the tastes of all students. This includes attending sporting events, jungle hikes, guitar lessons, cooking classes, movie evenings, trips to the theatre, parties, and excursions to local places of interest (archaeological sites, indigenous communities, national parks, etc).

From the evidence cited above, it is easy to understand why many people choose to learn Spanish in Central or South America. There isn’t anywhere better to combine a language course with learning new skills and having fun. For example, a Spanish course combined with Salsa, Merengue or Tango dance lessons is a great way of meeting other like-minded travellers and having fun. Many students forge lifelong friendships through such an experience.

So what are you waiting for? Immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture of Latin America for the most rewarding educational experience of your life.

Forget about Spain, where the accent isn’t as attractive and prices far higher than in Latin America.

is salsa hard to dance?… i want to learn some salsa?

16th March

i live in california and i want to take some salsa dance lessons! is it hard? will i learn.. i am going to pay for 5 lessons each lesson is an hour.. will this teach me how to dance?… my girlfriend is an excellent salsa dancer and i want to know if i can ever get to her level. thanks

No it’s not hard to learn to dance it. 5 lessons if they are any good are supposed to teach you some basic salsa, you should be able to dance to music afther 5 lessons. But it will take much longer to get really good at it. You will catch up to your girlfriend’s level eventually if you keep working on it.

Offbeat Holiday Gift Ideas for Grandparents

15th March

Unsure of what to get your grandparents this holiday? Not the books and the checked ties again. Check out these offbeat and a bit outrageous but nevertheless, thoughtful gift ideas.

The Ultimate Makeover Move

Delight grandma with a trendy, new look. Surprise her by setting up an appointment with a makeover team. Give her the entire works – the face, the hair and the outfit. Check out the transformation and enjoy the smile that lights up the wrinkles on her face. And while grandma is away, let grandpa play! Round up his gang and treat him to a special night out with the boys.

Get Together & Party the Night Away

Throw a 50′s themed party or better still a 50′s themed prom. Ask your grandparents and their friends to dress up like they did in the 50s. You can even rent a couple classic cars from “way back then” for everyone to show up in! Play music from that era, open up some cola and watch your otherwise controlled grandparents transform into noisy, giggling teenagers. Make sure you don’t miss out on the fun – be there as the chaperone!

Lessons that Help Unwind & Relax

How about giving your grandparents those lessons they always wanted to take but never had the time. Try dance lessons; Tango, Waltz, Ballroom or a sample lesson shaking to salsa. Adventure sports offer another option – water sports or maybe rock climbing. And if scuba-diving is not their cup of tea, maybe bowling is more up their alley. Art lessons can make a fun gift too. Your grandma will probably love to try her hand at sculpting, painting or craft making.

Weekend at a quaint inn – A different age & time

Give your grandparents the gift of old world charm. A weekend at a quaint inn would do just that. The charming atmosphere of a country inn and personable service will help them relax and take them to another time and place. The lush scenery, nature strolls, comfortable beds and scrumptious breakfast would make them fall in love all over again!

Gift Senior-Friendly Computer Software

As a Christmas gift for grandparents, you can get computer for seniors software, so they can benefit from easier communication with family and friends. It’s not just easy email for seniors that’ll attract their interest, but also the instant chats with family, regular stock updates, seeing regular pictures of grandchildren, online news, shopping, blogging and other fun activities.
